He was awarded three National Defense Service medals (two) United Nations Service medals, a Korean service medal with a clasp, and a Navy Occupation medal with a European clasp. He received several medals while in the Navy for good conduct. February 1, 1971, he retired from the Navy and transferred to the Fleet Reserve for ten years. Smith survived a gun mount explosion that burnt his entire body and affected his hearing loss in Vietnam. His duties on various ships carried him around the world. While in the Navy, he served aboard the following ships: USS Cowell DD547, USS Pierce DD753, FADTC, Dam neck Virginia, USS Thuban AKA 19, USS Hermitage LSD 34, USS Walworth County LST 1164, USN to Bainbridge, Maryland. On August 4, 1951, he joined the United States Navy. He leaves to cherish Deborah (Jerry Williams) Pastor, Christopher Smith (Denise), Kim (Pastor, Robert Wint), Sherry Smith, Leavon (Anthony Raymore).17 Grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
